The debut album was led by Syd Barrett; the only one that would be made under his leadership. The name of the album comes from the title of a chapter in The Wind in the Willows by Kenneth Grahame.

It was during the recording of this album that Syd's behaviour became increasingly erratic and David Gilmour, an old school friend of Syd's, was asked to join the band to cover for Syd when he was unable to perform. However, as the band grew tired of Syd's behaviour, he officially left the band in January 1968.
